Blue and white pottery tile depicting scene of cottage on shore with 3masted boats and one human figure. Tile has clear marking on back and is in very good condition. It was given to me by my grandmother. My family is of Dutch ancestry, with the original Dutch settler arriving in what is now Manhattan in the 17th century. Lauren’s Banker was one of the first settlers of what is now Westchester County, NY.

Vraag

I am curious to learn more about this tile -approximately when and where it was made and what its use was intended for originally. I would like to see more examples of Delftware of similar origin.

It's wonderful to have such a family piece. Unfortunately this tile was not made in Delft. I do not recognize the stamped mark. It might be produced in the Netherlands, but also in Belgium or the North of France.  The decoration in the corners of the tile are quite modern and probably made with a stencil. I think we can date this piece at the beginning of the 20th century.
