Oriental design in traditional blue and white, with mark for AK on the back

Vraag

I would appreciate any opinions on the age of this plaque as I am a bit confused.
On the one hand I read the AK mark to be for Adrianus Kocx but that would make it ca. 1700 and the look and feel of it is more like the 1980's or 90's.
Could this be a reproduction of an older item?

Hello,

You are correct in that this is indeed a reproduction with a fake mark. Most of the reproductions were made in France so there’s a good chance your plaque has its origins there too. A  few giveaways are the bright colours blue, the extra L near the mark, the drawing itself and it is of course, as you noticed yourself, much more recently made than the 18th century.

Kind regards, Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for confirming my suspicions.  In fact the couple I bought it from had been living in France, so this would seem to confirm the origin.  Fortunately, I did not pay a huge amount of money for it so I am happy with it as a decorative object.

Thanks again, Steve

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • More recent production technique After 1850, factories in and outside Holland developed more efficient and cheaper production techniques. This goes beyond the scope of this website. Read more
  • Forged mark In the 19th century, a financial incentive arose to sell more new earthenware as antique Delftware, sometimes even bearing forged Delft factory marks. Read more
