Delftware? Ribbed light blue Vase

3

Light blue ribbed vase. Few cracks and chips here and there.where buff colour comes through the thin white porcelain layer. Could be a white mark on the base but unsure. Has seen some age i think?

Vraag

My question is really is this “Delftware”. I assume its not but would like someone to talk me through why based on composition, decoration mark etc. If its not the. I assume its from northern France around late 19th century?

Verdict:

  • Not Delftware

Analysis:

  • Not made in Delft The term Delftware is only used for earthenware actually produced in Delft. Read more
  • Tin-glazed earthenware Earthenware with a glaze to which tin oxide has been added to make it opaque white. Delftware produced before 1850 is always covered with a tin glaze. Read more
  • Hand-painted An important characteristic of authentic Delftware is that it is hand-painted. Printing techniques do not occur on this earthenware. Read more
  • Mark of a non-Delft pottery/factory The typical Delftware also inspires producers outside of Delft, but genuine Delftware has only been produced in Delft. Read more

Dear Bill, the vase might be French, but could also be Italian or Portuguese. I can faintly make out an engraved mark (CV), is that correct? Although we have seen engraved marks in Delft, it is not common at all. The decoration is too bold, the glaze too shiny and the model, although similar to a Delft one, is not right. Based on all the above I would date the vase around 1900, which makes it too late for original Delft, which was produced through 1851. Would that answer your questions? Kind regards and know to find us a next time.

Thanks for your assessment. I thought it wasnt Delft but couldnt quite put it so eloquently as yourself ?. I am learning though and the “not right” comments i guess come from experience. Its good to hear your thoughts though on the boldness, glaze and the model becuase as a relative beginner a lot is now available to read and indeed see but there’s nothing to replace the human contact! This  helps people like me to jump through these hurdles and start the steep learning curves!! Once again thanks.

....forgot to say that ...yes it does seem to engraved C V !
